<p>The author analyzes the role of information technologies both for the functioning of the Bulgarian armed forces in the information society and in the process of their reform. Outlined is the architecture of the information system of the armed forces and the Ministry of Defense. Substantiated is the necessity for doctrinal, organizational, and technological innovations. The introduction of the institution of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the Armed Forces is recommended. The ways of interaction between the CIO and the existing structures in the defense establishment are outlined. The author places special emphasis on Internet, the importance of IT for achieving interoperability, ad the necessity of preparing the Bulgarian armed forces for conduct of and defense against information operations.</p>
